Paper Has Healthcare Spoiled

Now that electronic medical records implementation is on the rise, some are waxing nostalgic for their old paper charts.

On the EMR and HIPAA Blog, there is a great article on the advantages of paper records over electronic ones, including:

  • Immediate response to open
  • Never a delay when flipping pages
  • Instant on
  • No training needed
  • Multiple page view
  • Fast page switching
  • Flexible to an infinite number of documentation methods
  • Easily supports text and graphic input

Then there was a great comment that posted this humorous video “Medieval Helpdesk”

Grandma and the Big, Bad SGR

This video from the Texas Medical Association shows us the Medicare reimbursement issue from a child’s perspective.

Grandma and the Big Bad SGR!
A huge Medicare cut looms for doctors and Medicare patients. Who might that affect? People like grandma – and those who love her, as the child in this video shows. Unless Congress acts, on Jan. 1 doctors who care for Medicare patients face a 27.4-percent pay cut, because of a flawed funding formula called the SGR. Then millions of seniors (like grandma) and people with disabilities — and military families whose insurance is TRICARE — might have trouble finding a doctor´s care.

EMR By The Numbers – A Video Infographic

Yes, it is a commercial for GE Healthcare, but it is still cool to watch. And for those doctors trying to convince their partners about the benefits of electronic medical records (EMR), this video does list some additional points to consider.

How much does an average doctor get to keep out of every dollar they earn? How much time is spent on non-billable activities? See why using an integrated electronic medical records (EMR) system that incorporates scheduling, billing, insurance claims management, and patient records goes beyond just proving ”meaningful use.” Watch this entertaining and informative vinfographic (video infographic) from GE Healthcare´s Centricity Advance.

Meaningful Use Steps and the EHR Incentive Timeline

Learn what your medical practice needs to do to demonstrate ”Meaningful Use” and receive $44000+ in HITECH stimulus incentives. In part 2 of the HITECH series, Dr. Laffel goes into more details about the HITECH timeline. Brought to you by practicefusion.com

Accelerating Adoption of Change – Video

Another in our series of change management videos. In this video, Walter Ratcliff of Ratcliff Consultants, explains that “Telling Ain’t Training” and “Training Ain’t Adoption”. To find out what he means, click on the video below.

Change Management Basic Concepts – Video

We continue with our series of videos on dealing with resistance to change (see also Overcoming Resistance to Change) inherent in technology implementations such as EMR (for some basics on EMR, check out our EMR Simply Put videos). This video introduces some of the basic concepts for the change management process and is one out of a series of study aids for students studying the topic at Charles Sturt University, by Marco Cattaneo.

While not all of these points of discussion apply to the typical medical practice, there is still some valuable take-home information here for your EMR implementation project:

  1. Fail to plan = Plan to fail
  2. There should be one project manager
  3. Always keep your IT (information technology) person/firm in the loop on major decisions
  4. Do not allow any unauthorized changes to your plan

Overcoming Resistance to Change – Video

Mermaids and Crutches and Alligators, oh my…

People resist change! In this video created for Eliyahu M. Goldratt’s book, “Isn’t It Obvious?”, try to picture yourself as the EMR project champion dealing with the naysayers – and why forcing a technology implementation on people isn’t always the best strategy. Are you a Mr. P or a Mr. M?
